Creation, not Content

So....I think I was looking too far into the conceptual-ness of this project. I realized that by trying to give meaning to the correlation between color and sound, I was actually adding content to the website. So, I took a step back, and now have a completley random, interactive, contentless, (and very lagged) jumble of images. It's more about the user being able to create a unique piece of art as they interact with the site, not about trying to imply or teach the user anything. So, now that I have the visuals, I'm going to move on to the audio, and see if I can't make this more of a mess than it already is!

"Stop making that horrible green sound"

Apparently there is a phenomenom called synesthesia, where people actualy hear color. For example, a certain letter of the alphabet or a certain pitch may always appear as a particular color to a synesthete. Although not my original intent, my project may be playing on what it would be like to be a synesthete....too bad I'm not one...it would make this a whole lot easier.

Summary of project ideas

For the first project I would like to study the correlation between sound and color using Flash. I plan to focus on the primary colors, and possibly black and white. Here is a small overview of the primary colors.

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love, courage, and vitality. It is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility and brings text and images to the foreground.

Yellow symbolizes: wisdom, joy, happiness, intellectual energy. It produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often associated with food. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. It can also be seen as a lighthearted, 'childish' color.

Blue is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, youth, spirituality, peace and heaven. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is linked to consciousness and intellect.

By associating certain sounds with certain colors I could evoke a particular emotion from the viewer. By using flash I could make the site very interactive, for example, a certain sound would play when the user rolls over a particular area, or a certain color could appear when the user moves their mouse a certain speed.

No Content Website Examples

It was suprizingly hard to find no content websites. Here's what I came up with:

1. Jamcafe
This site makes connections between text and images through roll overs.

2. Levitated
A gallery of flash art projects.

3. Mumbleboy
This site runs through various digital images. A new image comes up when you click, but where you click doesn't seem to have any effect on what image comes up next.

4. Inkyslay
A non interactive flash project focusing on a naivete face

5. Zoom Quilt
Pretty much the coolest thing ever.

6. Mind you own buisness
An interesting way of navigating through various images using flash.
